Books not Bars The Books Not Bars "Alternatives for Youth" Campaign is a statewide effort to transform the California Youth Authority, the state's prison system for youth. At the statewide level, Books Not Bars is fighting to shut down CYA and replace it with a model that works: one based on helping troubled kids instead of punishing them. It Takes a Child: Craig Kielburger’s Story – A Journey Into Child Labour This film, directed by Judy Jackson, is about the life of Craig Kielburger. Kielburger “was 12 years old when child labor activist Iqbal Massih was killed in Pakistan. He immediately went on a seven-week trip to South Asia. What he learned has turned him into a passionate, articulate and effective advocate on behalf of child laborers everywhere. He is determined to put child labor on the international agenda. He is 15 years old. He started a child-run organization called Free the Children, which now has 10,000 members worldwide. It directs lobbying and petition efforts at governments and big business. F.I.F.A. now won't put its logo on any soccer balls that are made with child labor. Free the Children has raised over $150,000 to buy children out of bondage and create a school for them, while raising world awareness.” 56 min. in 2 parts for grades l5-12, 1998, $250. This video was created after a Mennonite Central Committee worker returning to Honduras ate several meals without the traditional beans. It explores how economic policies and other factors deprive Honduran farmers of their harvest. The accompanying study guide includes background information, study questions, recipes, advocacy suggestions and a litany. If the World Were a Village This book by David Smith, illustrated by Shelagh Armstrong, “allows the reader to conceptualize the whole world as if it were a single village inhabited by one hundred people. In this imaginary village, each person would represent 62 million people from the real world.” The book is suitable for children grades 2 – 6. Just Act: Youth Action for Global Justice Just Act works “to address the lack of working class youth of color in the discussions and decision-making processes of the U.S. global justice movement. School for Unity and Liberation SOUL is an organizing training and political education center for young people, a training program for social change.
