Grassroots Action for Global ChangePerspectivies From A Corporate World
In our efforts to counter corporate globalization, we must understand the minds of corporations: the strategies they are using to gain power in the world, the networks that help them coordinate on national and international levels, and the terminology they use to describe globalization. Global justice organizers are using many corporate strategies to further their own goals. For example: the World Social Forum, an alternative to the World Economic Forum, is organized annually to bring together activists from all over the world for networking and relationship-building; media collectives are making films that relate to globalization from a global justice perspective; and activists are using corporate factory tours to further their understanding of industries and to interact with workers. Below are some of the resources that corporations are using to achieve their goals. World Economic Forum The World Economic Forum describes itself as an “independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world. The Forum provides a collaborative framework for the world’s leaders to address global issues, engaging particularly its corporate members in global citizenship.” The WEF meets annually, usually in Davos, Switzerland. Globalization Globalization is composed of three videos: Globalization in Theory, Globalization in Practice, and Making Globalization Succeed, created as educational tools for current and future leaders of “corporations seeking to do business on a worldwide level.” The videos share the views of Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese business consultant, giving a very powerful glimpse into a mindset where “companies see the whole world as a market.” VHS: $385.95, DVD: $460.95, 1993.
