Grassroots Action for Global ChangeGetting the Word Out
Independent Media Center/Indymedia Indymedhia is “a collective of independent media organizations and hundreds of journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage.” Indymedia is a “democratic media outlet for the creation of radical, accurate and passionate tellings of truth.” Indymedia’s work is done through local collectives located all over the nation and all over the world. You can search for the collective nearest you on their website, http://www.indymedia.org, where you will also find resources and news articles on current events in Dutch, English, Portugese, Spanish, French, Italian and other languages. International Consortium of Investigative Journalists “ICIJ was launched in 1997 as a project of the Center for Public Integrity to extend globally the Center's style of watchdog journalism in the public interest by marshaling the talents of the world's leading investigative reporters to focus on issues that do not stop at water's edge.” ICIJ hand picks journalists to cover current issues such as access to water in a global context. Project Censored The mission of Project Censored is to educate people about the role of independent journalism in a democratic society. This group produces an annual compilation titled “Censored: the News That Didn’t Make the News,” featuring 25 stories culled from hundreds of submissions from around the world. The Project Censored website links users to the project’s website and e-mail list, as well as to media resources. The Strategic Press Information Network/SPIN Media Project The SPIN Media Project provides technical assistance to nonprofit public-interest organizations across the nation working to influence public debate and opinion while garnering positive media attention. SPIN offers public relations consulting, including comprehensive media training, strategic planning for media campaigns, and other resources, to nonprofit community organizations across the country. The Video Activist Handbook This book by Thomas Harding is a good basic guide to skills, equipment and knowledge required for activists wanting to use film as an organizing tool. It is a practical and strategic handbook to help encourage film as a way to share the untold stories and struggles of people and communities. The handbook tells the history of video activism, gives tips for making a campaign video, and shares strategies for organizing a video showing. Published in 1997, second edition 2001. 255 pages. |
