Economic Links

Updated: 2/8/09

All around the world, the global economy that maximizes greed and profits over people, communities and our environment has put countries into crisis. Seventy-seven years ago, Highlander was started during the Great Depression in the Cumberland Mountains, where poverty, difficult and dangerous work, and poor living conditions prevailed. Yet people organized to change their situation..

We know that people can understand the economy and can organize to change the way systems are working. We believe this is critical for all of us to do. Highlander has a long history of helping to demystify the economy so people can take action and we want to share some of the sources we have found recently. Please let us know of other resources and groups that we should add.

Here are some links for information and ideas to help understand the economy and campaigns to effect change:

  • United States Solidarity Economy Network - This network, which links to an international network, works to connect alternatives to the current economic system that value people, communities, equality and the environment. There is a conference March 19-22, 2009 in Amherst, Massachusetts.

  • Center for Popular Economics - On a related website, the Center for Popular Economics works to share information about economics so people can work to organize.

  • The Campaign for a People's Bailout is being coordinated by Jobs with Justice and the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS). Below are related websites:
  • Center for Economic and Policy Research - Useful research for better understanding our current economic situation and alternatives

  • Grassroots Economic Organizing - This long-time newsletter works to share stories of ways people are building a just, sustainable and democratic society.

  • Dollars and Sense Magazine - Dollars and Sense publishes economic news and analysis, reports on economic justice activism, primers on economic topics, and critiques of the mainstream media's coverage of the economy.

  • Congregational Toolkit on Unemployment and the Economic Crisis - Interfaith Worker Justice Network - Helps religious bodies help unemployed workers.

  • Jobs with Justice - Helps workers and their allies win justice in workplaces and in communities where working families live. Their work includes campaigns for organizing and collective bargaining rights, health care for all, immigrant rights, gobal justice, economic development, corporate accountability, and more. Their "Campaigns" page contains links to information and resources on all of these.

  • United for a Fair Economy State of the Dream Report - Demonstrates that while the general economy is in a serious recession, people of color are experiencing a silent economic depression that, in terms of unemployment, equals or exceeds the Great Depression. See the UFE website for additional information about the way that concentrated wealth and power undermine the economy, corrupt democracy, deepen the racial divide, and tear communities apart.
