DANGEROUS LIVING

A globetrotting documentary that highlights inspirational LGBT movements around the world. The interviews with activists are both heartrending and inspiring: A Honduran lesbian describes how her young son is assaulted by homophobes; terrified Egyptian men await sentencing after being accused of "debauchery" for drinking in a gay nightclub; and a Vietnamese man (in silhouette) fears exile if he organizes a gay movement. Yet also depicted is tremendous courage under extremely repressive conditions.

FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE MAQUILADORAS: A TIRN EDUCATIONAL VIDEO
From the Tennessee Industrial Renewal Network
In 1991, the Tennessee Industrial Renewal Network conducted a Worker Exchange Project with members of the committee Fronterizo de Obreras CFO, or Border Committee of Women Workers), an association of women who work in "Maquiladora" factories on the United States/Mexico border near Matamoras, Mexico. The video documents the trip that nine Tennessee women, primarily factory workers, made to this area. It includes their conversations with CFO members, a visit to a "colonia" where workers live, and an interview with the manager of a General Motors Plant.

Music and memory tell the story of Guy and Candie Carawan, activists and folk singers who have carried their work from the deep south of the Civil Rights Movement into today's daunting struggle for peace. Interweaving past and present, the filmmaker integrates her own reflections on growing up in a rich musical and political landscape with her parents' views on race relations, community organizing, and the sustaining power of song. This half-hour documentary includes footage from Highlander, where Heather spent most of her childhood. Additionally, the film pays tribute to regional musicians such as Nimrod Workman, Florence Reece, Chuck Neblett, and Matthew Jones.
