Horton House RenovationFrom June 2004 to March 2005, we renovated the Horton House, which was originally the home of Myles Horton, the founder of Highlander. When this work is complete, the house will provide a fully accessible space for small meetings, visitor housing, and social gatherings. The overall renovation plan was designed by Beth Eason of Elizabeth Eason Architecture in Knoxville. The kitchen was designed and built by Sam Clark, a designer and builder who is a longtime friend of Highlander and the Horton family. Sam also coordinated a volunteer group that worked on the house for two weeks in late September (see below). The group included Fran Ansley, Janet Atwill, Charlie Biggs, Joe Denton, Tony Denton, Robert Dickinson, Matthew Evans, Rosalind Hackett, Jim Sessions, Johanna Stiebert, David Tandy, and John Zomchick ![]() ![]() * * * * * July-September 2004 - Contractors renovate interior and rebuild foundation. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * * * September 18-October 2, 2004 - Volunteers build kitchen cabinets and a bathroom vanity, and begin painting the interior and building a new front deck. This work was planned and coordinated by Sam Clark. The volunteers also included Thorsten Horton, Charis Horton, Anne Romasco, Mikii Marlow, Norma Denbrook, Sue Charles, Vanessa Yancey, Keja MacEwan, and John Cline. On September 25th, they were joined by Lewis Sinclair, Beth Eason, Ray Howes, Lyn Hartman, David Tandy, Johanna Stiebert, John Zomchick, and Charlie Biggs, who helped with painting and dug footings for the new front deck. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * * * * * October 2004-March 2005 - Contractors finish interior and deck and install new siding and windows ![]() ![]() ![]() May 2005: Click here for pictures of the renovated Horton House. |
