2007 Venezuelan International Book Fair
(FILVEN 2007)

On November 9-17, 2007, cultural organizer Tufara Walller Muhammad represented Highlander at the 2007 Venezuelan International Book Fair (FILVEN 2007) in Caracas. Highlander was invited as a special guest to FILVEN 2007 following the participation of Roraima Albornoz, Press Attache of the Embassy of the Republic of Venzuela in Washington D.C., in Highlander's 75th Anniversary gathering. The theme of the central forum at the fair was "The United States: A Possible Revolution."

Below are pictures Tufara took in Venezuela, along with her comments about them. For links to press and online coverage of FILVEN and Tufara's speech, click here.

"Chavistas, the supporters of Hugo Chavez. Every day and night there were thousands marching in the street supporting the president."

"The following photos are from a oil refinery that president Chavez has given to the people. There is a clinic, hospital, shoe co-op., clothing co-op, childcare center, senior literacy center, grocery store and a place where people are learning how to repair and build their own homes."

"This is the clothing co-op where women get 6 months maternity leave and make each other birthday cakes. There was a section for children, and the women took turns checking on the kids. This was like no place I have ever seen before. There was a woman working who was 78. When I asked what happens when her production is down, they looked at me like I was crazy and said, 'We younger sewers do more work. We need her. She is our grandmother. She can work until she no longer wants to. We love her, and she makes us remember where we come from.'"

"A store that we visted, and people waiting for us to get out the store so they can go shopping."

"Me having dinner with the Minister of Culture for the Country of Ecuador."
