Program

Across Races and Nations was a four-year collaborative research and education initiative cosponsored by Highlander, the Center for Research on Women at the University of Memphis, and the Southern Regional Council in Atlanta. Completed in early 2005, this project combined community-based research with popular education in order to

  • analyze the changing racial context of the South;
  • build a collective vision for effective, bottom-up strategies for inclusive anti-racism work;
  • disseminate the results of this research to increase the capacity of local and regional organizations to work effectively in the changing racial context.

Highlander's research focused on Morristown, Tennessee, an Appalachian community that has experienced a large in-migration of Latinos and a loss of industries.
