Summer Social Change Workshop
Teachers as Change Agents:
Building a Stronger Education System

This workshop has been postponed and will be rescheduled. For information, contact Susan Williams at swilliams (at) highlandercenter.org. [6/18/08]

Should teachers play a role in social reform? Should teachers have more of a voice in how to improve our educational system? How significant should their role be? Should we be concerned with the role teacher's play beyond the classroom as potential political leaders?

Join Highlander and Educators for Progressive Instructional Change (EPIC- www.epicreform.org) in discussing these and other probing questions concerning the role of teachers in and outside of the classroom.

Highlander and EPIC believe that teachers should be more involved in decision-making about education. We are planning a gathering for teachers who have been, are, or want to be active in moving for better schools, better education and better conditions for students and teachers.

Highlander is a 75 year old popular education center in New Market, TN, that has worked with groups organizing around labor, civil rights, environmental justice, economic justice and immigrant rights. Highlander is currently working more and more with community groups in the Southern United States and across the country who are organizing to improve public education systems and the tracking of poor youth and youth of color into the criminal justice system. We see teachers as essential players in these debates.

In Highlander popular education fashion, this gathering will allow teachers a chance to share their own experiences and learn from others. The priority for participation at this workshop will be teachers involved in education in elementary, middle and high school education, particularly in public education systems.

This workshop will begin with lunch on July 14th and end with lunch on July 16th. Cost for the program, room and board is $350 per person. Room and board is provided at our workshop center on-site. We have limited scholarships available for teachers actively involved in educational change in public school systems.
