Highlander Center
Highlander is a popular education workshop center in east Tennessee that started in 1932 and today still brings together grassroots organizers, artists, educators, and workers to address the most pressing issues facing the people of the South. Rosa Parks came to Highlander just 4 months before refusing to give up her seat on the bus, and the civil rights anthem We Shall Overcome was developed and spread by Highlander and friends. Today, Highlander stands as a world renowned beacon for progressive, cutting edge organizing and is a leading resource for people working together across race, culture, and generations.
