Highlander Installs an Anemometer Tower |
![]() Anemometer tower installation. (See more pictures here.) |
The tower is 105 feet tall and is located at the top of the hill adjacent to the Horton House. The five arms that hold the anemometers (which actually measure the wind) are at 60, 80, and 100 feet. There is also a lightning rod at the top of the tower.
The anemometers, tower, and related equipment have been loaned by SACE and will be at Highlander for 6-12 months. SACE will download the data monthly and analyze it to determine if a windmill is feasible. If it is, Highlander could sell electricity to TVA through their Green Power Switch Generation Partners program to partially offset the power we use.

The installation of the anemometer tower is part of Highlander's long-stanidng commitment to sustainability and enviromenmental justice. In line with this commitment, we are also upgrading our facilities to make them more energy efficient and designing a new dormitory that will meet the standards of the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Enviormental Design (LEED) program.
The SACE team that installed the tower included Brandon Blevins, Chuck Mauldin, Rick Carson, and Brian Raichle. Additional assistance was provided by Highlander staff members Johnny Bailey, Charlie Biggs, and Tony Denton.
