In 1932, during the Depression, the Highlander Folk School was started on a Tennessee mountaintop in one of the poorest counties in the country with the goal of using education to help bring about social change. Who knew then that 75 years later, grassroots activists would still gather at what is now known as the Highlander Research and Education Center and return to their communities inspired to do things they hadn’t thought possible?
This year, 2007, marks the 75th anniversary of Highlander’s work for social and economic justice in the South and Appalachia. To celebrate this momentous occasion, and to broaden and deepen our ongoing work for justice, we are planning a year-long series of events and programs, including a three-day gathering at Highlander over Labor Day weekend – August 31-September 2, 2007.
You can be a part of the anniversary by hosting a party in your home or community in celebration of Highlander’s 75 years of work. All over the country and abroad people are bringing folks together to have a good time and support Highlander.
Join us in the celebration! It’s fun and easy to do. Your party can be a backyard barbecue, a formal dinner party, or you can serve your guests coffee or tea. You can invite a couple of people or 300. It can raise a little money or a lot. It can be a couple of hours or all day.
The main thing is that during 2007, we want to have as many parties as possible, bringing together Highlander’s old friends and making new ones. Your party will be both fun and rewarding in that it will raise money for Highlander’s daily work for justice and help build new facilities for Highlander’s work tomorrow.
