POPULAR EDUCATION
Popular education is known as education for social change because it begins with the person’s concrete experiences and, through a democratic process of reflection, dialogue and co-creation builds understanding of the connection of that experience to larger social problems, leading to a collective framework for action. Learn how to effectively use this education tool in your area of work. Trainers include:
- Pancho Arguelles, Colectivo Flatlander, Houston, TX
- Adrienne Maree Brown, Executive Director, Ruckus Society, Oakland, CA
PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH
Share principles and stories of participatory action research (PAR). This field of research was born from marginalized people and their need to gather information to help them in their struggles for justice. PAR takes many forms but has at its center the need for people to gain access to information, to learn research skills, and to recognize their own knowledge in order to support organizing for better workplaces, communities, and regions. Both novices and experienced practitioners are welcome. Trainers include:
- Susan Williams, Education Coordinator, Highlander Center, New Market, TN
- Roger White, Researcher, The Data Center Oakland, CA
- Maria Ana Gonzalez, Professor, University of Buenos Aires
CULTURAL ORGANIZING
Beyond creating beauty and entertainment, art and culture have the power to bring communities together. Learn the power of placing art and culture at the center of your organizing strategy. Learn tactics and methods that artists and other organizers can employ to grow individual and community power. Trainers include:
- Tufara Waller Muhammad, Cultural Organizer, Highlander Center, New Market, TN
- Amelia Kirby, Appalshop, Whitesburg, KY
- Marquez Rhyne, Carpetbag Theater, Knoxville, TN
MULTILINGUAL CAPACITY BUILDING
How do we build collective movement when we literally can’t talk to one another? Discuss and model the importance of creating multilingual spaces in our movement: What does a multilingual space look like? Why is it important? How do you build organizational commitment? This workshop will be interpreted based on need. Trainers include:
- Roberto Tijerina, Highlander Center, New Market, TN
- Yaira Andrea Arias, Center for Participatory Change, Asheville, NC
COMMUNICATIONS FOR CHANGE
Framing, messaging and communications planning is different for change work. This session will feature practical, strategic communications for advancing change, moving progressive policy, base building and more. Emphasis will be placed on participants’ own work, so please be prepared to bring campaign materials and/or information about current efforts. Trainers include:
- Makani Themba-Nixon, Executive Director, Praxis Project, Washington DC
- Ditra Edwards, Director of Training, Praxis Project, Washington DC
